Because I have answered many of your scary mental health questions on this forum, for example "Why doesn't cutting myself work anymore?" and "should I kill myself?", and other like questions, I think you need to get some serious psychiatric and physchological counseling before you do anything even REMOTELY connected with human services. I mean, come on, are you kidding me?????? I took a gander at your profile and questions you have asked when I discovered myself answering MANY seriously mentally ill questions in this forum. Not to be mean, but out of concern. I think you are very intelligent and have the capacity to do whatever you wish in life, AFTER you address and resolve all these other issues. Take care sweetie.

What does a Human Resource Management Certificate do for me

What does a Human Resource Management Certificate do for me?
It's going to be my final year at my four year institute and I have the opportunity to take the HR Management courses that (upon finishing) will award me with the Human Resource Management Certificate. My studies thus far have been focusing on Business Management and Mandarin Language. Ideally I'll be looking for positions within media management but part of the reason I've done business studies is that you can apply it to almost anything. Does getting this certification mean anything? Will it help me get a job coming out of school? Any information would be appreciated.

it depends on what you WANT to do in your career, and what you enjoy. i would take industrial psych, because i know i enjoy it, and i don't really care about human resources. JR puts you more in a management path. Industrial psych puts you more in an engineering path.

Human Resources Management doesn't deal with a great deal of math, but you WILL need to understand basic accounting principles. These are usually fairly simple; if you can understand basic algebra and work a calculator, you should be fine! I'm pursuing my MBA with an emphasis on HR, and I've had to take a great deal of extra accounting and economic related courses, but for under graduate studies, you'll learn the basics of payroll accounting and it really isn't that hard once you grasp the basic concepts! A great deal of HR deals with concepts and case law.

I want to take courses to earn a certificate in Human Resources because it's less time and money. Also, I already have a B.A. in Psychology. My husband thinks I'm "half-assing" it and thinks that if I go back to school I should get my Master's. Do you think he's right? Am I "half-assing" it?

I'm not sure which country you're in, but in the UK if you want to get on in HR, you need membership of the CIPD. To get this you need to do both the Certificate and Diploma in HR. I've worked in HR for 9 years now, and it is becoming increasingly necessary for HR staff to have this underpinning knowledge. I wouldn't advise anyone to jump into the masters level in HR without doing the Certificate or Diploma. You need the background knowledge, and work experience to succeed.

3
Your husband is absolutely right! You should definitely get your Master's Degree! That would be the best thing to do! Getting a certification might be less time, money, work, and the lazy way to do it, but ultimately, is it worth it? No. With a Master's, you could: 1. Say you have your Master's. 2. Have the opportunity to make: a lot more money, more raises, more bonuses, better benefits, etc.! 3. Feel great for what you have accomplished! 4. Change your career if you wanted/needed to! 5. Get offered a wide variety of great jobs! The point is....get your Master's!!! See, you married your husband for a reason, a very good reason.

4
I am a Director of HR, I have a BA and a Certificate. I know people with MBA's and Masters and they are no better off than I am career wise. Education is always of value, but when it comes to HR, my opionion is that it was the on the job training and experience that has been the most valuable.

These may include things like Compensation & Benefits, Training and Development, Employment Law, and the like.

I finished my degree in HR and Business Administration in December 2007 and wanted the exact thing you did. I passed the PHR exam and everything. Reality was that the only jobs HR wanted to hire me for were 8 dollar an hour entry level jobs. I had no problem with entry level, but the 8 bucks was pathetic. If you really want to go global, you need to study and pass the GPHR exam. Info is available at www.hrci.org Good luck!

Is it not time for Human Resources professionals to be fully conversant with technology

Is it not time for Human Resources professionals to be fully conversant with technology?
In these days of technological revolution there are so many professionals out there who are specializing in management courses irrespective of their technical education, knowledge and experience. And they are becoming asset to the organization where they work in since they have knowledge to handle both men and material efficiently. However, when it comes to human resource professionals there is a kind of laid back attitude found in them since they prefer to confine themselves with human resource aspects and nothing beyond that. But they still command the final say in the hiring process.Eventually, the businesses out there are losing out best candidates because of human resource professionals lack of knowledge and/or experience related to technological aspects.

Where I work, the Human Resources is at the end of the hiring process. The floor managers choose the candidates after they have been short listed. Then HR does the final background and education checks. I do agree that many are not up-to-date on the workplace technology but I have also seen many persons with Master's degrees that have less PC skills than a high school graduate taking evening continuing ed. computer classes at a community college part time.

A problem with my Human resource manager

A problem with my Human resource manager?
I went up to him to ask a question about my paycheck. I asked him, "Unless I'm reading incorrectly, I believe I'm missing a dollar from my paycheck. Can you show me where I can find it?" He shows me and I thank him. He then tells me, "You have no faith in me." I smile and tell him, "Of course I do," he then repeats himself and disagrees, which I laughed and said, "oh, yeah, true," he then said, "You see?" So at this point I'm unsure if he was joking around and I get back to, "of course, I do." I left after that because I had to get back to work and I wasn't going to argue with the human resource manager. How was I disrespectful? I simply asked him about my paycheck because I like to make sure I understand where my money was going and I didn't see the extra dollar I was getting.

You did nothing wrong. It was the HR manager that was off base. If he was thinking straight he would have "thanks for keeping us honest!" And left it at that. He's obviously insecure. His job is to help employees, not make them feel foolish for asking a valid question.

2
Sounds like you handled it OK, and he was just joking with you.

3
Be completely honest. It sounds very much as if this man has been questioned several times, either by staff or by management. The response shows a high level of insecurity. I realise that you tried to make light of the situation, ordinarily a good attempt at diffusing the situation. Somehow the HR manager took your approach as a personal attack. You meet people like this every day. Some people are so over-stressed / highly-strung in their work, that they can't spot even the most obvious joke. SO DON'T MAKE ANY JOKES WHEN THESE PEOPLE ARE AROUND. They have a fairly scarce sense of humour. If this person confronts you in future, tell them that you have every confidence in his accuracy and fairness, but you have a right to check on anything you don't understand.

Why does Human resources not take the complaints of men seriously

Why does Human resources not take the complaints of men seriously ?
Whenever a man complains about a female coworker with human resources he ends up targeted by human resources, send off to partecipate at a mandatory and humiliating sesitivity course although he is not the offender but the recipient of offense, or worse ? SUper Ruper quite wrong, above behaviour can be observed across the board.

Pretty broad, sweeping assessment, wouldn't you say? In fact, if you are to use the term 'human resources' as a general one - rather than referring to any specific company, then I would suggest that you are very wrong in your assessment. The theories of 'human resources' are very inclusive of both genders - it is, however, in the implementation or practice of it by certain companies that you may find gender biases... EDIT: Perhaps, Cassius, you should include your HR training and credentials, and then we can discuss your professional grasp of the departmental structure....

2
You are a man and you should shut up and follow you mean that feeling ?

3
The same reason that men in general are discriminated against much more often than women. In an attempt to end the discriminations against women and minority groups that once existed in this country a policy of reverse discrimination has taken effect instead of making everyone equal regardless of gender or race. For some reason this country can't seem to find any balance, there always has to be some inequality instead of fairness.

4
94 % of Human Resources Depts. are managed by women.

5
It's sexism.

6
They have to take valid complaints seriously. I bet someone just got sent to 'training'.

7
Ryde On is quite right on. I worked in HR, and it is my experience as well, that this field is women-dominated, on an average. That's not to say that they are ALL biased though. I've worked with plenty of level headed women, who took a report in all its seriousness despite the gender of the complainant. In two particular companies that I worked for, there were more complaints from women than from men, and some of the women were indeed close friends (surprising) with some of the men that they complained about. LOL ! Perhaps, the society, media and such play an important role in such issues.

8
I've never seen my companies HR department respond to anyone's complaint.. man, woman, it makes no difference....

9
Of course... After all, these are the women who were hired based on needing to have such and such number of women employed. So they hire them for the least demanding position when it comes to skill, morals, or competence - human resources. So, unless the guy is "super hot" then they will not only ignore his complaint but actually work against/target him like you said. On flip side, if he is "super hot" they'll do anything to get his attention - especially defame, back stab, and destroy other women.

10
I say you need to start looking for a new job where the HR department can be professional!!

11
Uh, you SAY that that's what happens "whenever" a man complains. Your saying something doesn't make it true. I find it extremely unlikely the EVERY time a man tries to lodge a complaint, he's sent to sensitivity training.

Human Resource or Marketing Major

Human Resource or Marketing Major?
Hey guys! I'm taking up Accounting but I want to shift to either Human Resource Management or Marketing cuz I sort of felt like I've chosen the worst course. At first I thought it's the best course cuz the debit-credit thingy is so easy. But when we started discussing all this finance related stuff, I got sooo annoyed. I'm so stressed man! I've been studying Accounting for less than half a year now but and I'm really not enjoying it so I think I should make up my mind while it's still early. I studied Business Management in my country for 3 years so I kinda know the basics of the different majors in Business and yeah --I think Marketing and HR are slightly easier. If I shift to Marketing, I'm afraid that I may not do well in terms of pricing because I'm a foreign student (I don't know the usual prices here in Australia). Also, I'm a bit shy so I might just collapse in front of everybody during reports. When it comes to Human Resource, I like listening to other people's problems and stuff --but I don't want to study that much Psychology. I took some Psych subjects before and I really didn't like the idea of memorizing the name of the Psychologists who did this-and-that sort of experiment. Which do you think is better for me? PLEASE HELP ME. I'm 20 and I wanna start working now. I don't wanna go to school forever. PLEASE.

Go for HR. The value of Marketing degree is less as performance matters in Marketing jobs but in HR jobs recruiters regularly look for HR specialization. Furthermore Accounting knowledge in HR is more handy than in Marketing jobs.

The training course you are hearing about is more than likely the study classes for passing the PHR (professional in human resources) exam offered by HRCI. I am a recent graduate and I can tell you it is hard to break into HR without finding someone you know to assist you at the company. I wanted to get into HR and was even willing to take an entry level 8 dollar an hour job (not for long mind you) just to get my foot in the door. I can tell you there are tons of entry level jobs, but the pay is crap. Soooo... I guess to sum it up you need to make a friend in HR at a decent size company (they will have more opportunities thana small company). I passed my PHR exam and have a bachelors in HR management, but knew no one in the area and could not get my foot in the door. One thing you might want to try that I started getting some nibbles from was contacting your local SHRM chapter ( Society for Human Resource Management). They are everywhere in the United States and tend to be very helpful. It is just time consuming waiting for a position to come open at a place you start making contacts at, unless you get lucky. Good Luck! (I still want to go into HR myself, but cannot afford the paycut now to go back to an 8 dollar an hour job)

HELP: What will happen to a Human Resource student after graduation

HELP: What will happen to a Human Resource student after graduation?
I'm an international student studying Accounting in a University here in Australia. Thing is, I think I've chosen the worst course in the world so now, I want to shift to Human Resource. I checked the Skilled Migration List and it says there that I can apply if I'm a Human Resource Manager. Btw, does that mean that I have to become a manager first before I can apply? But how the hell is that gonna happen anyway? It might take me forever to be promoted. All I know is that after graduation, I can apply for a Graduate Visa (temporary) so I can work here for 18 months. After that, I think that's when I can apply for a permanent visa (only if my profession is in the MODL. Please help me guys. I'm so freaking stressed. Can't I apply for migration just as a regular Human Resource graduate?

Human Resource Management is a growth area in all medium to large businesses...there will always be demand for people skilled in this area & if you are passionate about the job & and about people , you will find work... My advice would be to apply for work experience in a range of business & government areas when you start the course & see where it leads ...it may lead to employment on graduation . Lots of luck...

2
Apart from Human Resources Manager (which you won't qualify for until you've worked in HR for years), there are 4 other Human Resources occupations on the SOL. They are: • 2291-11 Personnel Officer • 2291-13 Personnel Consultant • 2291-15 Industrial Relations Officer • 2291-17 Training Officer http://www.immi.gov.au/asri/a-z.htm#p When you have your degree, you can use your 18 month Graduate visa to get work experience in a related field to enable you to apply for a permanent visa. The occupations are only low priority so a visa will be a long time coming, but as an Australian graduate with at least 2 years of academic study, you can apply for an onshore visa which means that you will be granted a bridging visa to allow you to stay and work here while you wait for your permanent visa to be granted. Of course, all of the above assumes that the occupations will still be listed when you apply and of course there is no guarantee of that.

what are the differences between negotiation and binding arbitration methods of contact settlement?
explain which method is better? if you could give me the explaination to the negotiatio method i would really appreciate it. i need an answer to this question for my human resource economics course

1
In negotiation, the two parties create the settlement agreement themselves, or at least try to. So they make proposals and counter propsals, trying to find a middle ground they both can accept. They are free to walk away and never reach an agreement. So there is no guarantee the process will end in a settlement. If it doesn't then they may have to resort to lawsuits etc., raising specter of HUGE legal costs. In binding arbitration, they both agree (ahead of time) that they will submit all their information and opinions to a neutral third party "arbitrator", who then plays the final decision maker, and returns a decision. The decision of the arbitrator is final. Therefore there is little risk of followon lawsuits and high legal bills. This is why many many contracts stipulate that both parties agree ahead of time to binding arbitration.

2
Not sure what your HR requires. Suggest there is a textbook definition that should form the base of your response. Negotiation is a broad term that can include all of the actions or non-actions for parties to reach a conclusion. Binding arbitration could be considered a susbset style of negotiation as it is a defined means thru which parties reach agreement.

need an answer from Human Resource Personnel

need an answer from Human Resource Personnel?
Would like to know, how to answer a major question, for a job interview. The question being what have I been doing since I've been unemployed for two years? I want to answer correctly and I don't want to sound dumb, so I need coaching if you will on how to answer this question. My answer is I've been attending workshops at my local career center, and I have been helping out family, (doing laundry, help in packing, unpacking, looking for apartments for family, and of course looking for a job). How can I say all of that without sounding dumb? Another question, I do not have any references from my last jobs, only because I know that two will give good references, and one will say that my attendence was horrible. Which is was horrible, because I was working two jobs, pulling 60hours a week (i thought I was super human).Any advice on how to get references? I really want this job, and I would really like the oppurtinity to show that I am an excellent candiate for this job i need help! Thanks!

2nd question first: Ask one of the two people that liked you at your last position if they will give you a good reference? If they are agreeable, give the new employer their (one of the two) cell number for a reference. You really shouldn't have to give a lot of explanation as to why or what you have been doing for the last two years, if you say you have been helping out the family in a time of need. More important is that you have moved past that time in your life and are ready to commit to your career in the business you are interviewing with. Good Luck.

Say you took two years to help your family. Focus on the classes you took and wanting to re-focus your life in another direction and how these courses helped you do that. Don't list the person who you know would give you a bad recommendation. You may want to contact the two people who will give you good rec's and let them know someone may be calling for a rec for you. Then they can expect the call and not be saying, "who's that?" Also - you might want to ask them for written references so you can take copies of it to job interviews with you. Good luck!
